Episode 5 of Out of Darkness begins with a heartfelt description of enslavement process of the African in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the resolve of African people for surviving through the tragic ordeal. The concept of race and of racism is then discussed in relation to the false notion of white supremacy, as a scientific justification by European nations for the conquest of Africa and the enslavement of African peoples.
The idea of white supremacy as a global system is further explored, along with its ramifications, while the concept of “racism” is placed within its proper context and definition as an economic group phenomenon. The term “white” and “black” are also explained as social statuses as opposed to races of people, with an explanation of the privilege afforded to those who are classified as “white.” In conclusion, the psychological theory of cognitive dissonance is discussed as a means to justify the history of inhumane behavior, terrorism, and subjugation of African peoples on the part of peoples of European descent.
